Soufu Honda is a Japanese calligraphy-based artist whose practice draws deep inspiration from natural forms and processes. Based between Hokkaido and Tokyo, her work explores the flow of the brush and the bleeding of ink as expressions of vitality, impermanence and the passage of time. Soufu has held solo exhibitions, performed calligraphic works internationally, and collaborated on projects ranging from corporate lettering and store logos to interior art installations.

During her residency on Nikoi Island, Soufu will create a series of large-scale calligraphic installations rooted in the island’s landscapes and natural environment. Using locally sourced materials such as sand and earth, she will produce original inks infused with the geology and energy of the land. Expanding beyond paper, she will work with surfaces such as tree bark and rocks, allowing light, flora and seasonal shifts to shape the rhythm and structure of the work.

Alongside the installations, Soufu will host community workshops in “performing calligraphy,” inviting guests and staff to explore mindfulness, movement and their personal connection to nature through brush and ink.

Ubah Rumah is an artist residency on Nikoi Island that supports research-led creative practice rooted in place, community and environmental awareness, encouraging meaningful cultural exchange. For guests, this means opportunities to engage with artists through talks, workshops and open studios, offering a deeper connection to the island beyond a typical stay.
